Join the EcoWalk at the LPPCHEA

On April 22, 2017 we are having our first EcoWalk for the year at the Las Pinas – Paranaque Critical Habitat and Ecotoursim Area (LPPCHEA). Earth Island Institute PH’s way of celebrating Earth month is to encourage the country’s ecowarriors to learn more about the environment that we live in through these ecological tours.

For this EcoWalk we have chosen the LPPCHEA or popularly known as the Freedom Islands (Coastal Lagoon among birders), a protected area in the heart of the metropolis.

If you want to join the April 22, 2017 EcoWalk you can text us at +639474103566 or +639276957359 and register using the form at the end of this post. We can only accommodate 40 individuals so register and confirm your participation as early as possible.

The Freedom Islands

The Las Pinas – Paranaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA) is one of the remaining mangrove frontiers in Metro Manila serving as a sanctuary for marine life and avian refuge for more than 80 species of local and migratory birds. Because of its multifarious biodiversity and fragile ecosystem, it was declared as a critical habitat in 2007. Ironically it is presently bombarded with threats of relentless garbage disposal and reclamation projects.

The 175 hectare haven defends the coast from strong winds and waves. The lagoon performs as an outlet for major waterways of nearby cities. The mangrove and salt marshes functions as a buffer protecting sea grass, seaweeds, and coral reefs from heavy sedimentation and serves as habitat for a wide-range of aquatic and marine species that serve as feeding areas for fishes and mollusks. Fisherfolk families and coastal dwellers depend on it for livelihood.

LPPCHEA is included in a list declared by the Ramsar Convention as wetlands of international importance.

What to bring, wear, and prepare

  • Wear comfortable protective clothing appropriate for the summer season such as lightweight long sleeves, hats, visors, rubber shoes, and the like.
  • Bring lots of water. Bring light snacks, but food consumption will only be permitted on the stops and assembly depots.
  • Bring a camera, notebook, pen or pencil for taking down of notes and documentation.
  • Bring something to cover your nose. The smell of the coastal lagoon may not be acceptable to some people.
  • Bring the medicines that you need to take for emergency purposes, especially for those who have asthma, or sensitive to heat and insects.
  • And lastly, bring extra clothing.

Itinerary

Assembly at the LPPCHEA is at 5:00AM to 6:00AM. Pre-assembly from different locations can occur earlier. An orientation will happen from 6:00AM to 6:30AM and the EcoWalk will be from 7:00AM to a maximum of 10:00AM.

We will aim to wrap-up the EcoWalk by 9:30AM and leave LPPCHEA by 10:00AM.
